As mosquito season approaches, we are all looking for ways to control the mosquito population in our backyards. As families fire up their barbeques and spend more time outdoors, mosquitoes often become the source of much frustration. More importantly, mosquitoes can become a serious health threat to people and pets. With just one bite, mosquitoes can transmit West Nile virus or other viruses that can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). They can also transmit heartworm disease to dogs and cats.

Here are some tips to help prevent the threat of mosquitoes in your backyard this season.

Prevention Tips:

• Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Either eliminate or treat any standing bodies of water in receptacles or containers in your yard.

• Standing water can be treated with Pre-Strike products. • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants for extra protection.

• Use a repellent on skin and clothing containing DEET. Apply repellent sparingly to exposed skin. Look for a repellent containing approximately 35 percent DEET.
